Forest Hills, North Cleveland Park and Van Ness

The Washington, D.C. Metro is a dynamic region, loaded with attractions and activities for visitors and locals. Samplings of these are the Hillwood Museum & Gardens, Rock Creek Park, National Zoo and Uptown Theater. The Hillwood Museum & Gardens was created out of the estate and art collection of Marjorie Merriweather Post. Post, the heiress of Postum Cereal Company and founder of General Foods, Inc., had a sizeable collection of French and Russian furnishings and artwork. Visitors can enjoy the home and its furnishings, plus several themed gardens around the estate.

Rock Creek Park is a sprawling, 1,754-acre natural site situated in the heart of D.C. The park is used for a variety of activities, including bicycling, inline skating, horseback riding, picnicking, free play, golfing and sightseeing. Historic points of interest at Rock Creek include Pierce Mill, the Old Stone House, and the many statues and monuments within Battleground National Cemetery.

Adjacent to Rock Creek Park is the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, also known as the National Zoo. The zoo is both a popular and expansive family-oriented recreational site as well as a research facility. By working with other zoos and conservation groups, the National Zoo does its part to study and protect animals from all over the world. Open year-round, the zoo is free to visitors.

The Uptown Theater is a local favorite for movie-goers. The single-screen theater opened in the 1930s and had its trademark 40 x 70-foot movie screen installed in the 60s. A 1990s renovation provided some modern comforts, without taking away the theater’s lush Art Deco styling. Uptown seats about 850 guests, including balcony seating for 300. With its classic ambience, the Uptown is considered one of the best places in D.C. to catch a movie.
